I love summer! Unfortunately, it does not last too long in our area, at least it seems to fly by. However, fall isn’t too bad. And from what I hear, it is a favorite with most people. So what is it that makes fall so special? Apple cider, cinnamon sticks, hayrides, caramel apples, pumpkin picking? Well you can find all of those things occurring right here in Montgomery County, PA!
Growing up in Upper Gwynedd, my first real job, besides lawn mowing for neighbors and my paper route for The Reporter, I worked at Merrymead Farm. In fact, that is where I met my wife! For the last 28 years, they have held their infamous Merrymead Harvest Days.
Fun for the whole family, the festivities begin September 30th with the storytelling and lighting of “The Great Pumpkin”. Immediately thereafter, the hayrides begin! Every weekday, and every weekend in October, you can enjoy some of fall’s favorite activities including wagon rides for the kids, children’s games, pumpkin painting, face painting, inflatables, farm animals and the Harvest Slinger which tests how good you are at launching pumpkins with a giant sling shot!
However, the main attractions, and most fun IMHO, are the 700ft Cornstalk Tunnel and of course, the 5 acre Cornfield Maze. The picture below speaks for itself!
Bring your flashlights and try out the maze or the tunnel in the evening for extra fun. Be sure to check the Merrymead Farm website for dates and hours of the activities, reservations and any cancellations due to weather. So hop on that hayride to the pumpkin patch and pick out that perfect pumpkin or several. There are plenty to choose from!
Once you get to carving that pumpkin, enter it into our Pumpkin Carving Contest. I am really looking forward to seeing all of the great entries. Use your imagination and if you mess up, just head back to Merrymead for another hay ride and more pumpkins!
